5 Power Couples in Carrier and Essential Oils

Carrier oils are an important (though often overlooked) factor when using essential oils. Carrier oils are natural by definition: they come from a diversity of vegetarian sources and usually they only have light odors, making them the ideal substance to dilute your essential oils. Although most carrier oils can be mixed with most essential oils, some mixes work better than others.
Carrier OilsGrapeseed Oil and Basil Oil
Grapeseed oil absorbs quickly into the skin and acts as a potent moisturizer; it does have a stronger smell than some other carrier oils, however. For this reason, grapeseed oil should be mixed with a stronger smelling essential oil, like basil, to mask the odor — this way, you'll benefit from both the positive properties of the grapeseed oil as well as those of the basil oil (such as it's ability to treat acne, alleviate skin conditions, and increase blood circulation).
Sweet Almond Oil and Sweet Orange Oil
Sweet almond oil is high in vitamins A, D, and E and is most frequently used to moisturize the skin. Because of its moisturizing properties, it can help heavier essential oils absorb into the skin more easily. Sweet almond oil should be paired with sweet orange oil for a fresh scent that can work as a tonic for the body and help settle the stomach.
Coconut Oil and Rosemary Oil
Coconut oil is one of the thicker carrier oils; because it's particularly high in saturated fat, it helps protect the skin and is often used for moisturizing skin and hair. Mix coconut oil with rosemary essential oil to help stimulate healthy hair growth and alleviate dandruff and dry scalp symptoms.
Olive Oil and Jasmine Oil
Olive oil, which has a thicker and more oily texture than many other oils, is a great option as a carrier oil: it's readily available, relatively inexpensive, and most people tend to already have it on hand at home for cooking purposes. But olive oil is also very soothing for the skin: mix it with jasmine oil for a rich scent that helps calm nerves and acts as an antidepressant.
Jojoba Oil and Lavender Oil
Jojoba oil is very close to the body’s natural oils, making it a perfect option for diluting other essential oils. High in vitamins A and E, jojoba oil promotes healthy skin and has been known to help with acne treatment. Paired with lavender oil, it can also help treat insomnia, relieve stress, and alleviate various skin conditions.
